A common experience …

A long-term illness affects the person living with it, their primary family care partner, additional family care partners, professional care partners, employers and community organizations. Relationships between the caregiver and receiver, caregiver and her/his significant other and relationships between family members are affected. The stresses of extended caregiving often impact the ability to care for self and the care of a person living with the long-term illness.

Mary’s Experience …

I journeyed for two years with my mom, who passed away in her 60′s from a degenerative illness. During that time, I acted as her primary care partner. In our family, I was responsible for all decisions related to her care, decisions I often had to make without much background knowledge. Her particular illness was unpredictable and took many abrupt turns along the way. The long-term care journey was disorienting for both of us. I lived with a sustained high level of chronic stress and I completely neglected some aspects of self-care which was detrimental to my overall health and wellness. The extended illness experience also changed my relationships with my significant other and extended family: during the period of active caregiving; during the period of recovery and renewal; and continuing years after my mom’s death.
