a common experience …

Extended illnesses in families are difficult for all involved and often create changes in personal health and family relationships that are uneasy, uncomfortable and frequently distancing. Expressive arts including music and dance help to facilitate physical movement, positive emotional responses and social connections that benefit individual, family, group, and community health and wellness.

mary’s experience …

Through the course of extended illness, I applied my knowledge of music and movement therapy methods to facilitate positive, love-filled interactions with my mom, whose symptoms included apathy, emotional volatility, and a rapid deterioration of gross and fine motor skills. I knew from previous experiences that music can facilitate movement and soothe or brighten the emotions. The moments of singing and dancing with my mom and with our family through illness to end-of-life are the moments of greatest joy despite devastating loss.
