Harmony at Home, Phase 3: 3 of 18 Sessions: The Kitchen

Serving Dish, Colored Glass

Serving Dish, Colored Glass

People say the heart of the home is the kitchen. This is the category of estate stuff we are now uncovering, sorting, grouping, and deciding on. It is three-generations plus+ worth of kitchen and dining dishes, table dressings, cooking tools… This category cuts the heart open with memories of holiday family meals, the good, the sad, the mad, the silent, the funny, the being together… which is now apart.

We started by separating boxes that looked more like “dining room” from “kitchen supplies.” This took most of two hours… opening boxes with a blade, peeking inside, unwrapping a few top-lying objects to determine assignment to one of two groups. With the last hour, we fully unpacked, unwrapped, and sorted the dishes we recently inherited from Karl’s mom’s house-downsizing in May. Next session this week we will continue unpacking, unwrapping, and sorting additional dining dishes inherited from my parents and grandparents.

I keep reminding myself that the memories attached to the few things I keep will keep their spirits tangible at the table.

Moving forward with a listening heart,
vision, inquiry, and action,
~ Mary
