In the game Monopoly, one can play on and on, pass Go and land in jail or pass Go and collect $200, lose everything and/or win a lot. Gaming was one of my father’s favorite hobbies, and the risk he took with a CORE aortic valve did fix his aortic issue, but not the rest of his heart. In some sense, the process of waiting to receive the valve felt like forever and once he received it he felt as if he was in a jail of rehab facilities and swallowing tests; in another sense he collected what was due and reported from beyond (through a psychic friend), “I was done. I’m with Margaret now and I’m happy.” Knowing when you’re done served him well as a poker player and as a chronic heart disease patient.
